History of the Homestead

The William Cullen Bryant Homestead was built in 1790 by William Cullen Bryant’s great-grandfather, Thomas Bryant. It was inherited by William Cullen Bryant’s father, Peter Bryant, and then passed on to William Cullen Bryant in 1825. The poet lived in the homestead with his family until his death in 1878. After his death, the homestead was passed on to his daughter, Julia, and her husband, who lived there until their deaths in the early 1900s. The property was then sold in 1910 and went through several owners until it was purchased by The Trustees of Reservations in 1987.
