The Piney Woods School: Our History

The Piney Woods School was founded in 1909 by Dr. William J. Flournoy and his wife, Eliza. Dr. Flournoy was a prominent physician and educator who believed in the power of education to transform lives. He wanted to provide a quality education to students of all backgrounds, regardless of their race or economic status.

The Piney Woods School was one of the first boarding schools in the United States to be racially integrated. In 1950, the school opened its doors to African-American students, and in 1951, the school was fully integrated.
