Koppel was a professional dancer who had trained at the School of American Ballet in New York City and had performed with the New York City Ballet. She moved to Portland in the early 1990s and founded the school with the goal of providing quality dance instruction to the people of Maine.

Since its founding, Portland Ballet has grown to become one of the most respected dance schools in the United States.
