Dance Theatre of Harlem is a world-renowned dance company located in New York City. Founded in 1969 by Arthur Mitchell and Karel Shook, Dance Theatre of Harlem (DTH) is a multi-cultural dance company that has become one of the most influential and respected dance companies in the world.

Our Mission

At Dance Theatre of Harlem, we strive to use the power of dance to enrich and inspire. We are committed to creating a vibrant and diverse community of dancers, teachers, and students who are dedicated to the highest standards of excellence in dance.

Our History

Dance Theatre of Harlem was founded in 1969 by Arthur Mitchell and Karel Shook. Mitchell was the first African American male to become a principal dancer with the New York City Ballet, and Shook was a former dancer with the New York City Ballet. The two had the vision to create a dance company that would bring together the best of both classical and contemporary dance styles.

The company quickly gained recognition and acclaim for its innovative choreography and performers. In its first season, the company performed at the White House and the Kennedy Center. Since then, Dance Theatre of Harlem has performed in over 30 countries and has been featured in numerous television specials and films.

Dance Classes

Dance Theatre of Harlem offers classes in ballet, modern, jazz, hip-hop, and African dance. We also offer classes in composition, choreography, and improvisation. Our classes are designed to develop technique, artistry, and creativity in a supportive and inspiring environment.

Performances

Dance Theatre of Harlem produces an annual season of performances at the Apollo Theater in Harlem. We also produce special performances throughout the year. Our performances feature a variety of styles, from classical ballet to contemporary works.
