History

The Oklahoma City Ballet was founded in 1972 by the late John Taras, a former dancer with the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo. Taras was a visionary leader in the world of ballet, and he wanted to bring the beauty of classical ballet to Oklahoma. He was joined by his wife, the late Maria Tallchief, and together they created the Oklahoma City Ballet.

The Oklahoma City Ballet quickly became a leader in the world of ballet, and has been performing in Oklahoma City for over 40 years. The company has won numerous awards, including the National Medal of Arts, the Governor’s Arts Award, and the Oklahoma Arts Council’s Arts Achievement Award.
