The Western Michigan University Department of Dance is a vibrant and exciting place to learn and explore the world of dance. Located in Kalamazoo, Michigan, the Department of Dance offers a wide array of classes and programs to suit all levels of experience and interests.

Our Mission

The mission of the Department of Dance is to provide quality instruction in the art of dance. We strive to create a supportive and inspiring environment where students can develop their skills and knowledge in a variety of dance styles. We also aim to promote a lifelong appreciation for the art of dance.

Our Programs

The Department of Dance offers a wide variety of classes and programs, including:

Dance Technique Classes

We offer classes in ballet, jazz, modern, tap, hip-hop, African, and other world dance styles. Our classes are designed to give students a strong foundation in the fundamentals of dance, while also exploring the creative possibilities of each style.

Performance Opportunities

We offer a variety of performance opportunities throughout the year, including our annual Dance Showcase, which features student choreography and performances. We also offer master classes with guest artists, and opportunities to perform with professional dance companies.

Choreography and Dance Making

We offer classes in choreography and dance making, which focus on the creative process of making dances. Students learn to create dances that are meaningful, expressive, and technically sound.

Dance Education

We offer classes in dance education, which focus on teaching and learning methods in the classroom. Students learn to create engaging and effective lesson plans, and to develop the skills necessary to be successful dance educators.

Community Outreach

We are committed to engaging with our local community and providing meaningful opportunities for our students to give back. We offer a variety of outreach programs, including performances for local schools and organizations, and volunteer opportunities.

Research and Scholarship

We offer a variety of research and scholarship opportunities, including internships, grants, and fellowships. We also host a variety of conferences and symposia each year.
