What Students Say

President Madison's family plantation is in the process of a restoration period. Very exciting to visit yearly and see progress that's been made. It's always enjoyable to visit this historic home. The beauty of the home, great staff, the ability to learn so much about Madison. The estate's vicinity near other former president's personal homes makes for an ideal place to visit. I highly recommend a trip here to experience and explore the significance of James Madison and his plantation.

I decided to take a solo trip to visit Montpelier because I wanted to have as much time as I wanted to explore. I could not have asked for a better tour or day to enjoy learning and exploring. My tour guide was so knowledgeable and I took a lot of good notes to share with my students. I loved walking the gardens and grounds as well. Their new exhibits “mere distinction of color” are also wonderful. I love their emphasis on valuing all people that lived here, not just James Madison.

Wow. We learned so much here. The exhibits are amazing and to me much more moving and authentic than Monticello up the road. The slave quarters exhibit in the basement is artful and haunting. If you have kids in tow, sign up for the family tour. You will probably have a private tour as we did and the folks who are guides are extremely knowledgeable and dedicated. Stop in the walled garden as well. The cafe is wonderful and we got a free cupcake at closing from the chef.

Beautifully restored estate with expansive grounds and views of the mountains. The house tour we went on put Madison's life into perspective and explained his accomplishments and which experiences had shaped him. I really appreciated that the most controversial subject, slavery, was not glossed over but explained in the social and economic context of the period. If you love learning about US history you should take time for the house tour plus an in depth topic tour.
