Ballroom Dance Technique Tips
Pivot technique:
- Pivots are done without rise.
- Start with the first half of a natural turn spin turn.
- Pivot left backing (1) as in the natural spin turn, overturning instead a full half turn to face line of dance.
- Continue with a right foot forward, heel lead step, through partners legs onto ball of foot.
- pivot right forward (2) one half turn, landing backing line of dance with the left foot to the side and back, ball action, making room for the partner's foot to step between.
- Pivot left backing (3) on the ball of the left foot one half turn, coming around for the next right forward step.
- Pivot in multiples of three. repeating (2) and (3).
- Finish on the third or ninth right foot forward followed by a reverse turn or any left foot forward movement
- Finish on the sixth left foot back followed by the second half of a box or reverse turn.
- No rise: the heel barely skims the floor during the pivoting action.
- Knees are flexed.
- Turn head in advance of the pivot to face in the direction of the next landing.
